Sea water tanks

sea water tankA sea water tank of dimensions 2x2x2m is situated in the Sea Water Room. The tank is above ground and has large viewing windows through which observations can be made. A 2.5 ton travelling crane is located centrally above the tank.

The seawater in the tank is circulated through a chiller which can cool the water to 2 degrees Celsius, before being filtered and UV treated to remove solids and bacteria.

The tank can be used for calibrating optical equipment as seawater has a different refractive index from freshwater. The seawater tank can also be used to establish if equipment is suitable for use in high corrosion environments.
