Sea water tanks
A
sea water tank of dimensions 2x2x2m is situated in the Sea Water
Room. The tank is above ground and has large viewing windows through which
observations can be made. A 2.5 ton travelling crane is located centrally above
the tank.
The seawater in the tank is circulated through a chiller which can cool the water to 2 degrees Celsius, before being filtered and UV treated to remove solids and bacteria.
The tank can be used for calibrating optical equipment as seawater has a different refractive index from freshwater. The seawater tank can also be used to establish if equipment is suitable for use in high corrosion environments.
